My Final Post

Hey everyone! We completed another term with lots of new experiences and information. This year’s Current Issues course helped me a lot. It has lots of strengths like direct material design prepares us for the following courses and helps us with these tasks in an innovative way. It also had a few weaknesses such as, some of the tasks are not applicable in some of the classroom scenarios because of the inequality of opportunity between the learners.  The course was a bit hard in terms of using technology proficiently and the necessity of creativity. Sometimes it was hard to come up with a different idea or find an effective tool. That’s for sure that following the instructions made our job easier than ever. My favorite task was the AR/VR based teaching material because what is more delightful than traveling and seeing new places while using a new language? My least favorite was the flipped-classroom teaching video because I don’t really like editing videos. If I have to make a...

My AI Integrated Teaching Material

Hey everyone! Hatice Büber and I prepared an AI-integrated teaching resource this past week. To help students improve their writing abilities and strengthen their vocabulary related to the second unit of their coursebook, we decided to use an AI-based image generator.  We designed a Mentimeter quiz for them to take as part of the pre-task to refresh their memory and engage their schemata. We chose an AI-based image generator (Imagine. Art) for the target task, and we asked Ss to describe their imagined room and the room of another pair. We wanted them to construct sentences regarding the differences and similarities between the pictures as a post-task.  Comparing the process to earlier tasks, it wasn't that difficult. We learned a lot and had a great time.  You can access our worksheet from here . And also giving you the link to Hatice's blog.

My AR/VR based material experience

Hey everyone! I'm excited to share the incredible journey we undertook in our latest ELT assignment. We teamed up with my partner and ventured into the realm of augmented and virtual reality to create a virtual tour of Cairo. The use of AR and VR in the classroom ensures a student-centered approach while inspiring students to learn and create new things. However, these approaches have drawbacks as well, such as distracted students and technical issues. From navigating technical challenges to brainstorming creative questions, this project pushed us beyond our comfort zones. We used VR videos for the traveling part and for the local cuisine part we found the 3D Falafel experience. These VR experiences and answering the questions aimed to spark our students' imaginations. Choosing Cairo as our virtual backdrop caused some difficulties– limited videos and the quest for authentic questions. Yet, overcoming these challenges became part of the adventure, fueling our growth as educato...

First Flipped Classroom Teaching Video Experience

Hello to all of you! It's alperen. This week our subject was flipped-classroom approach. we were asked to prepare a teaching video for our lecturer. Allow me to briefly describe it. In basic terms, the flipped classroom approach offers both in-class and out-of-class learning experiences in a student-centered learning environment.  The flipped classroom strategy offers benefits as well as drawbacks. Let's begin by talking about the benefits. An engaged and student-centered learning process is offered by this method. Additionally, it is tailored and adapted to the requirements of the students. Yet, a few drawbacks could make the procedure more difficult. For example, it necessitates student autonomy and drive. Due to their independence, students occasionally fail to finish assigned assignments, which results in gaps in their classroom knowledge. For sixth graders, my partner Hatice and I created a teaching film about the location of cities. Because of the tool we chose, the pr...

First Corpus-Based Material Experience

Hi again. I haven't posted anything on my blog in a while, and I really missed this. We took a class this year called ‘Current Issues in ELT,’ and one of the assignments we had to finish was ‘corpus-based.’ I completed the task individually. My topic was quantifiers (only many, some and a little). I prepared this worksheet for 9th-grade students in a public school who have some difficulties while making the distinctions of these quantifiers.      The idea of creating a new thing sounded appealing but it wasn't that appealing for me and I struggled a bit. There were many stages like designing the layout, creating exercises, deciding on a template, etc. It took a lot of time but it was totally worth it.      There are four activities on my worksheet. After completing the first activity, which checks the students' background knowledge, they will be able to recognize their areas of weakness and be encouraged to concentrate on them whe...

DIGITAL STORYTELLING

Hi again, Digital storytelling preparation process was awesome! It was really a good experience for me. Me and my friends decided to create a PSA which is a way to inform people about different topics. Our topic was digital piracy and it took 3 days to complete this assignment. The first day we decided on our topic altogether and later we shared our works. On the third day, we prepared our scripts, recorded our voices and gather some pictures, videos, and background music. If I ever become a teacher I don't think that I'll give this as an assignment even though it's so fun to prepare because it's so time-consuming and complex. Burcu edited our videos via iMovie which is a video editing application developed by Apple. She said it wasn't a complicated app she easily handled the editing process. In some parts, not everybody's voice is at the same level so she had to synchronize the recorded voices. As I said the process was tiring the outcome was wonderful it was l...
